A Complete Street aims to safely accommodate all users of the right-of-way: pedestrians, bicyclists, micro-mobility users, transit riders, public safety vehicles, and motorists of all ages and abilities. Complete Streets reduce traffic congestion, increase safety and access, promote public health, improve quality of life for residents and business owners, and reduce environmental impacts. The Town of Brookline is redesigning Washington Street between Washington Square (at Beacon Street) and Brookline Village (at Route 9).

The total cost of the project is estimated at $25.9 million, of which 80% will be federally funded and 20% will be state funded. After the 25% design phase is complete, MassDOT will program the project on the State Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) for funding allocation. Construction will begin in 2028.
